  • Nadal tested, moves into US Open third round

    9/5/09 6:44 AM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal tested, moves into US Open third round World No. 3 Rafael Nadal fought his way through to the third round of the US Open Friday night, outlasting Nicolas Kiefer in four sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Rafael Nadal extended his lead in the head-to-head series with veteran German Nicolas Kiefer to a perfect 5-0 on Friday, dismissing the German in four sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The World No. 3 withstood a second-set surge by the veteran to pocket a victory after nearly three hours of play. The 23-year-old Spaniard, a US Open semifinalist in 2008, is through to round three for the fifth consecutive year.

Nadal began the match quickly, earning a double-break lead in the opening set. The Spaniard won 27 of 36 point in the first set, delivering a 6-0 set to the German in just 24 minutes.

Kiefer recovered in set two, rallying from a break down at 1-2. The German, picking up his level of play with 18 winners, captured the next three games to lead 4-2, aided by a handful of unforced errors from Nadal. Kiefer collected double-set point at 5-3, leveling the match on an ace.

The players contested a close third set, neither earning a break point until the seventh game. Nadal missed three break point chances at 4-3, but connected on the fourth. The Spaniard led 5-3, courtesy of a netted forehand from Kiefer. The World No. 3 held three set points at 5-3, taking a two-sets-to-one advantage on an errant backhand from the German.

Nadal earned two break points during the critical seventh game of set four. The Spaniard converted the first, forging ahead 4-3 after Kiefer launched a backhand over the baseline. The World No. 3 passed through the rest of the 6-4 set without facing a break point, closing the match on the 60th unforced error from the German’s racket.

Nadal ended the night with 39 winners and 22 unforced errors. He moves on to face compatriot and 32nd seed Nicolas Almagro in the third round. Almagro survived a three-hour and 35-minute match with American Robby Ginepri on Friday, prevailing 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Nadal is 3-0 lifetime against Almagro.

torres9 , 9/5/09 8:53 AM

How about that maturity and professionalism from Kiefer. He didn't cry like a baby after losing!

homos , 9/5/09 10:14 AM

which means kiefer is better than Nadal who cried after losing to Fed in Wimby 2007

torres9 , 9/5/09 11:26 AM

torres....we all have emotions..especially when we are youngn and enthusiastic BUT its abt showing discipline and control ON THE COURT! of the court u can do whateve ryou want to..nadal didnot cry after losing wimb 07..do u have any proof??? its only that the honest rafa told himself that he cried in the locker room as it ws his closest chance of wining his dream title...u have written nonsense so i must elaborate...FEDERER cried like a baby at aus open 09!! cudnt even control his gush of tears on the court! thats the pnt...and he already had 3 oz titles! it ws rafa's chance for a first and his for a 4th! still rafa controlled muchhhhhh better!!!

vamosrafa , 9/5/09 11:47 AM

Doesn't matter, crying is crying... Both are babies,,,

torres9 , 9/5/09 12:15 PM

Oh come on, torres...I like Fed almost as much as you do but not necessary to have a go like Rafa like that right? After all, Roger also lost a set to Acasuso second round at RG...it's all part of the game, you win points, you lose points, you win a set, you lose sets. No big deal, in the end, a win is a win.

And on topic - so glad to see Rafa pull through :)

jyannis , 9/5/09 1:13 PM

There is no shame in losing a set or two in a match, that's why it's best of 3 or 5, no one expects to win in straight sets 100% of the time. No one, in a level playing field, should be able to win all the GS they can lay their hands on. People go to tennis matches to see a contest, not a one-sided show.

The great player is the one who comes through a difficult match, not the one who prances about and wins easily against people who have been cherry picked for him.

Kiefer is a good experienced player, and he was able to draw on his experience and give it a shot. He was so worried not to be bagled in three straight sets, that he put his skates and played scinttilating tennis, but Rafa was able to find that little extra to win.

carrie , 9/5/09 1:43 PM

coming from carrie who berated Fed for getting broken in 1st round... LOL...

I call it bad karma.

On paper, Rafa should have won it in str8s but again, like I said, easy opponent doesn't mean u gonna win easy.

torres9 , 9/5/09 1:50 PM

haha...torr ....its funny how the sing a different tune everytime ....

Yesterday , I was under the impression that many here thought it was unacceptable to get broken ....i guess it is ok too drop a set now ....hahah ....ridiculous expectation . Ive said it before .....people need to start looking back at the FO09 ... Grand Slams are not as predictable as MS. Its typically where the players of tomorrow suddenly shine ....

All that matters is the "W" .....how you get it is irrelevant at the end of the day ...

Good job by Kiefer ...i give him due credit for a good match . I think he could have took this the distance and went to the 5th ....too bad ....

C'MON !!
USO09 ...where we celebrate our sweet 16th !

fedexfan , 9/5/09 3:34 PM

Did anybody notice how the crowd started chanting "Kiefer!Kiefer!" after he broke back for 2 all in the second set ? Then the Mac brothers were quick to point out it reminded them of the French crowd cheering on the Sod at FO. I thought it was comical actually because I didn't think he would even take a set and I was sure he wasn't going to win. Nonetheless Nadal must be wondering why the French/ NY crowds don't like him. It could be that they are just conceited pricks or there is something about Nadal that just rubs them the wrong way. Hope they never turn on the Fed.

chr18 , 9/5/09 4:05 PM

I think they just wanted a contest. Apparently, Rafa is very popular in the USA, his picture is everywhere I understand from SKY Sport.

carrie , 9/5/09 4:10 PM

Why dont you look into ticket prices sometime and youll know why fans dont show up to see 6-0 6-0 6-0

Slicer , 9/5/09 4:32 PM

same happened at wimb 08 final, crowd shouted for rafa especially late in the match but i don't think it's because they hated fed, fans always want to get their moneys worth but more so to see a dog fight
french crowd also probably don't like spaniards, no love lost between france and spain! but french crowd have gone against french players before, there was a lot written about their behaviour, FO crowd very weird

homos , 9/5/09 4:33 PM

Rafa is not the best sportman with his constant grunts and 'i'm the most macho man' demeanor.

Why the crowd always support against Rafa is a no-brainer.

torres9 , 9/5/09 4:47 PM

there you go focussing on rafa again. you'd feel a whole lot better if you just come out of the closet and admit your obsession with him!

homos , 9/5/09 5:23 PM

So far Rafa has had a raptuous applause from the crowd when he enters the court, louder than any other player. They were sorry for Kiefer, because they thought he was going to be bagled three times.

carrie , 9/5/09 5:30 PM

Rafa's not that good to bagel Kiefer.

torres9 , 9/5/09 6:08 PM

ha ha nice try but rafa did bagel kiefer

homos , 9/5/09 6:18 PM

Woopsss, someone drops a set...
torres9

erm... watching the current fed match? or djokovic match? and did you see the murray match? forgive me if i'm right, but all top 4 have dropped a set in the last 24 hours. so take your unjustified smugness elsewhere please

Sib69 , 9/5/09 6:59 PM

according to torres, it's called karma!

homos , 9/5/09 7:26 PM

"erm... watching the current fed match? or djokovic match? and did you see the murray match? forgive me if i'm right, but all top 4 have dropped a set in the last 24 hours. so take your unjustified smugness elsewhere please"

Perfect post Sib69!!!!! But torres will find something to say. His day is not complete unless he rags on Rafa for something.

fan4tennis , 9/5/09 7:56 PM

Yes, All dropped a set which confirmed my theory that no match is easy. Easy draw or no easy, what's important is you win all the matches in the Grand Slams and that is what Fed did so consistently.

Homos, yup, Nadal did bagel Kiefer but not 3-sets.

FED's THE BEST!!! Confirmed no.1 whateva happens this USO

torres9 , 9/5/09 8:06 PM

chr18: You are so totally misinformed that it is sad. The NY crowds LOVE Rafa. They have mobbed him everywhere he goes and the cheers are thunderous for him! The crowd chanting for Kiefer is no different than when the Wimby crowd starting chanting for AndyR (does that mean they hate Roger to you?). Everyone loves the underdog and also want to see more tennis. They weren't chanting for Kiefer the ENTIRE match (as torres would like you to believe) so get your facts straight.

fan4tennis , 9/5/09 8:11 PM

Rafa's not that good to bagel Kiefer.

torres9 , 9/5/09 6:08 PM

torres, do you know what bagle means? 6:0 is a bagle.

carrie , 9/5/09 8:28 PM

carrie, mind me not putting, 'bagel Kiefer in 3 sets' at the end of the sentence. I was playing Texas Poker on Facebook.

torres9 , 9/5/09 8:44 PM

I have another theory about why this seems like a rigged draw.

FED has lofty winning records against everyone except 3 people: Nadal, Murray, Simon, Tsonga (1-1 is not lofty)
Even Djokovic(4) ,Delpo(5) and Roddick(6) has a lopsided losing h2h against the Fed

So whateva draw Fed gets, it will be easy especially in the earlier rounds because he hardly loses to a player outside the top 5 during his 5-year domination and built lofty h2h on most players.

Thus, any draw for Fed will be seen as 'easy'. I'd say this is the side-effect of being too successful

torres9 , 9/5/09 8:53 PM

Then why don't you post that on the blog thread for conspiracies where it belongs instead of a Rafa match thread torres????

fan4tennis , 9/5/09 9:08 PM

Someone's changing the topic.... LOL...

torres9 , 9/5/09 9:47 PM

NY, Kiefer, Kiefer bageled......I do believe all those belong in the match thread of Rafa vs Kiefer!!!!!!!!!!! Your post is about fed and the draw. Was fed on the court too with Rafa and Kiefer?

fan4tennis , 9/5/09 10:14 PM

Rafans are the best in posting unrelated topics in Fed forum. What's wrong with me doing the same?

torres9 , 9/5/09 10:34 PM

"Someone's changing the topic.... LOL..."
torres9
, 9/5/09 9:47 PM

So I guess you were talking about yourself then--LOL
