  • Nadal likes his sleep despite record-setting success

    9/5/09 4:43 PM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal likes his sleep despite record-setting success Rafael Nadal had confirmed that he's no fan of the late-night finishes so common at the US Open, even after helping set a record on the men's side.

The four-time French Open winner and current Australian Open champion, completed a minor footnote for history with his post-midnight win over Nicolas Kiefer which stretched into Saturday morning at the US Open.

Nadal's four-set success insured that for the fist time in post-1968 Open era history, all 16 men's seeds will play the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Nadal, the third seed, was suitably impressed with the communal accomplishment form the elite - but the Spaniard was even more focused on getting to bed after completing victory in the wee hours.

"It's too late", said the 2008 New York semi-finalist at the only major he has yet to win. "What time is it?" Told it was 1:15 an - just after dinner in late-night Spain, Nadal said that his own programme was not yet over for the night.

"I have to eat dinner and before 3:30 it is impossible be sleeping. Anyway, I think is a little bit late. That's my opinion, I would love to play at 7 pm".

usta officials should do something with the schedule in order to save players from having to stay so unreasonably late, 3:30 that's unacceptable!!

Johan, i wondered how long it would be before one of you guys wrote and article to justify federer playing first, wednesday night. you made your point, nadal wouldn't mind playing first either! maybe your article send the message that is intended, which is, federer is not the only one who wants to play before the ladies. you did good! you made your point!

Feel sorry for Blake-Robredo. Sharapova match is lasting forever (as usual for the WTA) and Roddick-Isner is after this. Then another WTA match before Blake-Robredo can even think about stepping on court. Has to be some way the organizers can balance out between the men and women's matches without having players go to bed at 3:30 in the morning!

Whining... whining... whining...

I wonder what the transport is like in New York. In the UK, no one will be able to get home if they had night sessions that finished at 1 o'clock in the morning. It's crazy. I honestly believe that they see the players as machines.

The tournament organizers set up transport for the players. I doubt the players would attempt the subway at 3:30 AM.

Commentators are now wondering IF Blake match will even happen tonight!

US open always sucks when it's about match scheduling...why the hell players have to stay awake that late, also one unfortunate guy has less time to recover for the at the end ( Murray was the victim last year )...Federer had an underselpt, overworked Murray for bashing....only for the silly scheduling by USTA..

f4t it's the spectators I am takling about, having to travel in the early hours of the morning.

I had opportunities for tickets to the O2 in November but I don't live in London and there is no way I could get home from the O2 safely, so I didn't bother.

It's all about Money. The organizers don't care about the players per say as to the crowd.the people in NY stay up all night so ...
