  • Djokovic, Haas and Verdasco advance

    9/4/09 4:21 AM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic, Haas and Verdasco advance Novak Djokovic moved through to the third round with an easy win over Australia’s Carsten Ball. Tommy Haas moved through as well, but with more difficulty.

Novak Djokovic def. Carsten Ball 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic did not need to get out of third gear in his second round match against Carsten Ball. The Australian donated a whopping 45 unforced errors in the three set match; he hit just 29 winners. Djokovic did not play his cleanest tennis. Of particular concern for the Serb was his break point conversion statistic. He was able to break Ball once in each of the three sets, but he had 16 opportunities. Ball did not give Djokovic much of a test and Djokovic will have another low-ranked player in the third round, American Jesse Witten.

Tommy Haas def. Robert Kendrick 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(3)

Germany’s Tommy Haas had a bit of a struggle with American Robert Kendrick. Haas was fortunate that Kendrick had trouble on serve today. The American is known for his blistering first serve, but he only hit 8 aces and his first serve percentage languished at 48%. The good news for Haas is that he played far better on Thursday than he had in his second round match against Alejandro Falla. The German had an impressive 18 break point chances and he saved the 4 break points against him. Haas will take on Fernando Verdasco in a compelling third round matchup.

Fernando Verdasco def. Florent Serra 6-3, 6-0, 6-3

Spain’s Fernando Verdasco demolished Frenchman Florent Serra in their second round match. Verdasco rolled through the first and second set with no resistance from Serra. Verdasco faced 1 break point in the first set, which he fought off. The second set was even more emphatic from the Spaniard. Serra did not get a whiff at a service break and he was broken all 3 times he attempted to serve. Verdasco had one small hiccup in the third set, where he was broken but he was able to break Serra twice to keep the lead.
