Davydenko cruises, Soderling gets free pass at U.S. Open Nikolay Davydenko crushes Jan Hernych in straight sets on Thursday at the U.S. Open. Robin Soderling also reaches the third round, as Marcel Granollers retires after just two games.

    (8) Nikolay Davydenko d. Jan Hernych 6-4, 6-1, 6-2

Davydenko sprinted into the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday afternoon, destroying Henrych in a mere one hour and 28 minutes. Hernych, a counter-puncher, played right into Davydenko's hands, as the eighth-seeded Russian often has little trouble with opponents who can't overpower him and instead let him dictate from the baseline. Davydenko was able to do just that, especially when the 70th-ranked Czech had to toss in a second serve. Feasting all over Hernych's second offerings, Davydenko won 62 percent of those points and broke serve six times in just three sets. Davydenko, never one to hold serve with consistent ease, put in 75 percent of his first deliveries, won 80 percent of his first-serve points, and was broken only once. Next up for the 28-year-old is Marco Chiudinelli, a four-set winner over Mikhail Youzhny.

    (12) Robin Soderling d. Marcel Granollers 2-0, retired

Soderling gets a better workout in hitting sessions with coach Magnus Norman. Nonetheless, he got his desired result after completing just two full games, making it to the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday afternoon. Granollers suffered an apparent back injury in the first game of the match and called the trainer during the initial changeover. The 88th-ranked Spaniard was still in clear pain after the medical timeout and he promptly dropped serve to go down 0-2. Soderling raced to a 40-0 lead in the third game, at which point Granollers promptly called it quits.

The 12th-seeded Swede will take on U.S. Open Series winner Sam Querrey in the third round on Saturday. Querrey needed four hard-fought sets to get past fellow American Kevin Kim. Querrey blew a set point on his own serve in the second-set tiebreaker, but overcame 49 unforced errors to dispatch Kim.
