  • Del Potro hammers Monaco to kick of U.S. Open campaign

Del Potro hammers Monaco to kick of U.S. Open campaign Juan Martin Del Potro begins his U.S. Open in fine form on Wednesday afternoon. He crushes fellow Argentine Juan Monaco in straight sets to reach the second round.

Juan Martin Del Potro stormed into the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday afternoon, rolling over Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 15 minutes. It was a match in which both Argentines came out flat, and only Del Potro managed to turn his game around.

An error-filled first set saw the world No. 6 commit 10 unforced errors while striking just seven winners, but Monaco sprayed 19 errors while hitting a mere four winners. Del Potro served horribly (38 percent) and was broken once, but he still took the set thanks to two breaks of his own.

Monaco, ranked 41st in the world, continued to flounder in set two. He dropped serve three more times, in part due to winning only a third of his second-serve points. Del Potro continued to struggle, but he had more than enough for his overmatched opponent.

With a comfortable lead in hand, Del Potro finally got going in the third. A quarterfinalist last year in New York, he did not lose a single point on serve in what was the final frame of play. Del Potro's forehand heated up and he blasted 13 winners past a hopeless Monaco.

Del Potro, again one of the hottest players on tour heading into the season's last Grand Slam, finished with 28 winners and 25 unforced errors. A defensive Monaco hit only 15 winners while committing an inexcusable 46 mistakes. Next up for Del Potro is Jurgen Melzer, who ended Marat Safin's U.S. Open career in four sets earlier in the day.

I am quite sure they said he was just turning 21. Jurge was alright if not absolutely great against Marat, poor man.. I only ever watched the match for three minutes and that was it as I was tired. I had to really lock the room with our dog barking constantly. But Mrtin should be in his greatest form before taking up one of the finest players in the sport today. The thing I like about Jurge is his ability to keep with the match and takes each shot with care. All the players need right now is utter true belief in themselves, focus and the ability to carry on through. Good luck to you two and the rest. I shall catch up. JUST DO IT .,

I am so sorry for the inter-ruption but I am viewing Aussie Sam Stosur's match for the third time already today and is likely for a fourth when it restarts at 9pm. It runs all day. She had a third set match and lost to some 'King' chic from the Orients.. I left home at 9am and didn't return until 1 mid-day and am unsure if Potro's match was on. However, it seems unfortunate. But the way they just thrust the above match at your face after they showed it three hours ago is of course, very interesting.... The poor Aussie thing lost for God's sake. I want to meet it again on the current.
The Australian coverage of the OZ Open itself is magnificent. From it's own Foxtel is very frustrateful. Always. Very expensive. So beggars can not be choosers. I am hoping they were fair in the 'early days'.
Because as it comes, I can gladly declare their system is quite r u d e..,
