    Djokovic destroys Ljubicic to advance
Novak Djokovic needed just over an hour and a half to dispatch of Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic in the first round at the US Open on Tuesday.

This first round match was not even as close as the lop-sided scoreline suggests. Ljubicic won 7 games total, but never once was the world No. 4 tested on his own serve. Ljubicic appeared sluggish from the start of the match. The one good thing for the Croat was that he was able to send 10 aces past Djokovic. But his groundstrokes were dismal, flat and tired-looking. Djokovic will take on Carsten Ball of Australia in the second round.

Igor Andreev did not fare as well as Djokovic. The Russian was upset by American qualifier Jesse Witten who is currently ranked 276 in the world. Andreev played so poorly, that Witten was able to take the middle set of the match at love. Witten will take on Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez next.

Florent Serra also made his way into the second round. The Frenchman took out struggling Serb Janko Tipsarevic in three tiebreaks. Tipsarevic had 16 aces for the match, but he also donated 7 double faults. Serra’s steady game was enough to derail the Serb 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Yeah, excellent start for the Djoker. Hope he can keep it up.

But I can't believe Tipsa and Andreve are out. That's a surprise.

Tipsy was no surprise.

Andreev, however....that scoreline is an absolute STUNNER!

I just read interview with Nole (finally he deserved one!)..he was so sweet!. :)

"Q. Are you curious how the fans would welcome you this year after what happened last year?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, look, I mean, this is past. What happened last year, the way I get it, to be honest, was like, I don't know, a fight with a girlfriend. Just a little fight with a girlfriend. These things happen. It was something that everybody can learn from it...."
I hope that crowd will understand what he is trying to say this time and try to be a little less "frosty"... :)
Keep up with good work Nole! Great play last night! Great! Ajde, Noleee! <3

What a nice match report title, I completely agreed with it, right word (destroyed), for an amazing tennis, Novak has shown to the world, God blessed you son...

In all honesty it was more like "Ljubicic rolls over for Djokovic."

I have no idea where Ljubicic was today. But he certainly was not playing tennis. Or moving his legs.

the crowd was frosty?
i didnt catch him walking in, i only started watching from when the match started, and i noticed the crowd was kinda dead. i think only in the third set did they manage to gasp with awe at the way he was playing :P
and when did he say 'please love me NY crowd'??

mriiidula , 9/2/09 10:02 AM

mriiidula, he didnt actually say it! he just told ljub to challenge one of his points, like he did against roddick. i thought it was an attempt to win over the crowd, coz he was winning comfortably and could possibly allow himself to think about other things...

Clijsters has done that before, indicating to an opponent to challenge a bad line call. It's great sportsmanship. Good on Nole even if he's doing to win the crowd but he's got great sportsmanship. Even when he loses, he smiles and doesn't sour the mood for the winner by being grumpy or upset. I hope the NY crowd doesn't jeer him this year, it's bad enough having to fight alone on court. He really needs to win another slam.
