Roddick thrives amid late-night NY "crazies" Andy Roddick is putting his finals loss at genteel Wimbledon out of mind, starting his US Open campaign with a rollicking win under the lights in front of his rowdy American crowd at the US Open.

The Nebraska-born, Texas-based fifth seed has links to Gotham, with his wife a runway model. A month and a half after digesting a bitter 16-14 fifth-set loss for the title at the All England club to Roger Federer, all-American Roddick is back in his element.

His straight-sets win which ended past midnight over Bjorn Phau was highlighted by the loud atmosphere typical of late-night Flushing Meadows.

"You play in all sorts of atmospheres. There's not as many people, but the ones that are there sure are vocal/drunk".

Roddick agreed that the late-night fans surely qualified as perhaps loveable "crazies".

"I guarantee half the people out there were probably here all day, too. They have to be pretty passionate and really enjoy what they're seeing and the whole experience of it.

"It's one in the morning. I guarantee you, they all have to work tomorrow. They certainly have to get up earlier than I do. It is kind of unique and pretty cool."

Roddick is pleased with the contrast between New York and Wimbledon, saying that's what makes tennis interesting."We don't play on the same surface. We don't use the same balls. We don't play in the same place. It's all different all the time.

"The thing that makes Wimbledon so cool is the tradition and the whites. I get into that when I'm there. I love it. I think it's great".

"The equivalent of that here is the night sessions and the craziness".

I boardered in a popular boys' boarding school in 1993 and we had a choreographed School Production. It included songs like New York New York, Puttin' on the Ritz, The Jig and Lily of Laguna. Dancing to 'New York' reminded me of what it's like being famous.. We wore all black with magician hats. My Lord!!
Rodc's match ysterday at the first round, America 09 went fast and nice. He came through strongly wearing the black too and I sincerely wish him all the very very best. Go Andeu!!
