    Roddick impressive in opening round
Top American hope Andy Roddick blasted his way into the second round of the US Open with an easy straight set victory over Germany’s Bjorn Phau.

Andy Roddick wasted no time taking the lead on Monday night under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The American broke opponent Bjorn Phau to take immediately to take a 3-0 lead. The German held once for 3-1, but Roddick broke him again at 4-1. The American played clean tennis in the first set; he hit just 4 unforced errors and smacked 8 winners past the helpless Phau.

Phau played better in the second set. Roddick continued to play well, but the German raised the level of his game enough to secure a rare break of the American’s serve. Roddick was not derailed, however. He once again secured a break and an insurance break from Phau to capture the second set 6-4.

The German could not maintain his level in the third set. Unforced errors crept into Phau’s game. He hit just 3 winners to 10 unforced errors. Roddick was dominant in the final set that Phau won just a single point on the American’s serve.

The win takes Roddick another step closer to a collision course with Roger Federer in the semifinals. The American will face Marc Gicquel of France in the second round.
