  • Blake off to winning start at U.S. Open

    9/1/09 1:38 AM | Ricky Dimon
Blake off to winning start at U.S. Open James Blake defeats Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in straight sets on Monday evening to kick off his U.S. Open campaign. He is joined in round two by Tommy Robredo and Robin Soderling.

    (21) James Blake d. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-1, 6-4, 7-5

Blake showed signs of ending a dismal summer slump by dispatching Ramirez Hidalgo in one hour and 56 minutes in the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday evening. The 21st-seeded American, who has been dealing with a foot injury, never dropped serve in the first set and used two breaks to take it with ease. Far more comfortable on the fast hard courts of New York than his Spanish opponent, Blake also rolled through the second. He encountered little resistance from the 115th-ranked Ramirez Hidalgo until getting broken while serving for the match at 5-4 in the third. Blake, however, broke right back at 5-5 and served it out at 6-5 after coming back from 0-30. Next up for the world No. 23 is Olivier Rochus, a straight-set winner over Igor Kunitsyn.

    (14) Tommy Robredo d. Donald Young 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

Young did well to qualify for the main draw and he gave Robredo some trouble, but the 20-year-old American's week came to an end against the U.S. Open's No. 14 seed after two hours and 17 minutes. After losing the first set, Young did not face a single break point in the second and used one break of his own to level the match. Armed with far more experience than his opponent, however, Robredo took control in sets two and three and was too consistent for Young from the baseline. The 15th-ranked Spaniard lost a mere four points on serve in the fourth set en route to closing out the match in style. Awaiting Robredo in round two is countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, a five-set winner over Peter Polansky.

    (12) Robin Soderling d. Albert Montanes 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Like Robredo, Soderling overcame a second set hiccup to take care of business against an underdog opponent, dismissing Montanes in one hour and 54 minutes. After dropping set two, Soderling woke up in the third and stormed through it with an amazing 15 winners against just two unforced errors. Montanes, a Spanish clay-court specialist, bounced back to make the fourth competitive, but the 12th-seeded Swede's power games was too tough on fast hard courts. In the second round Soderling will take on Marcel Granollers, another Spaniard who overcame Mischa Zverev in five sets.
