Novak Djokovic upped his odd of winning the US Open with a run to the final in Cincinnati, complete with a beatdown of the recently recovered Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. Here is a look at the second section of the US Open draw.
If Djokovic could have hoped for any of the 5-8 seeds to end up in his section, he probably would have chosen No. 8 seed Davydenko or No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He got neither. Roger Federer drew Davydenko and Rafael Nadal drew Tsonga. Djokovic was left with No. 5 seed Andy Roddick. The same Roddick who has had a fantastic year, including an appearance in the Wimbledon final opposite Roger Federer.
As far as form goes, Djokovic only had one good tournament this summer (Cincinnati) and otherwise has been struggling a bit. Roddick, in fact, took the Serb out in straight sets in the quarters of Montreal not a month ago. Roddick for his part has looked in fine form most of the summer. His big hard court losses have come against Juan Martin Del Potro – which, as luck would have it, is in the other half of the draw with Andy Murray.
If Djokovic and Roddick were to meet in the quarterfinals, Roddick would have to be considered the favorite. The problem is that this section is sufficiently stacked with dangerous players that this is no foregone conclusion.
