  • Roddick gets first men’s night match

    8/30/09 8:30 PM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick gets first men’s night match American star Andy Roddick will kick off his 2009 US Open against Germany’s Bjorn Phau under the lights and with the New York crowd firmly behind him.

2009 Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick comes into Flushing Meadows rested and hungry for his second Grand Slam title. The American lost in the second round to countryman Sam Querrey at the Masters event in Cincinnati. The loss was probably a result of his run the previous week in Montreal, where he made the semifinals before going out to Juan Martin Del Potro.

Roddick is ranked 80 spots higher than his first round opponent. Germany’s Bjorn Phau is 85 in the world, a position that requires him to rotate between playing main ATP Tour events and Challenger events. Phau’s best hard court result this summer came last week in New Haven, where he made the round of 16 before going out to Sam Querrey.

Phau and Roddick have played on two occasions; Roddick won both. The German took a set from Roddick in Beijing last year in a tiebreak, but Roddick won the other two sets in the match 6-2 and 6-1.

Historically, Roddick has lived and died by the strength of his serve. If he served well, he could win, if he did not, imminent disaster loomed. Since pairing with super-coach Larry Stefanki, however, Roddick has improved other areas of his game. He no longer goes to net out of desperation, but design. His forehand and net game have vastly improved and with it, his results. At 5 in the world, Roddick now enjoys his status as one of the favorites to win the US Open.

Prediction – Roddick in straight sets.
