Surging American John Isner will take on Victor Hanescu of Romania in one of the more intriguing first round matches at the US Open. Isner will be joined on Monday by Radek Stepanek and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
John Isner vs. Victor Hanescu
This is not an easy match for either man. John Isner has had the best summer of his career with two semifinals results in LA and Washington. Victor Hanescu has also had great success in 2009. The Romanian is at a near career-high 29 in the world. Isner is ranked 55, but he is the better hard court player. Most of Hanescu’s best results have come on clay courts earlier in the spring. Isner is a big server; the fast hard courts in New York will only help him. This could well be the first upset of the tournament. Isner in 4.
Radek Stepanek vs. Simone Bolelli
This should be a relatively straight-forward match for Radek Stepanek, provided the Czech man is healthy. Stepanek played a Davis Cup match in July, but he struggled with a knee injury and took the rest of the tie off after he defeated Juan Monaco. He was beaten soundly in Cincinnati by Andy Murray, but Simone Bolelli is not the hard court dynamo that Murray is. Bolelli prefers to play on clay, where his grinding baseline game works best. The Italian has not had very good results in 2009, even on his preferred surface. Stepanek should advance in straight sets.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. Andreas Seppi
Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber had one of the biggest wins of his career earlier this season when he knocked Novak Djokovic out of the French open in the third round. The German has not had much success of late, however. He had a bad loss to Chris Guccione in the opening round of Cincinnati just 2 weeks ago. Fortunately for Kohlschreiber, Andreas Seppi prefers playing on clay. The Italian had a win at the San Marino Challenger event earlier in August. Seppi has only played 2 hard court events this summer; his most recent result was a third round appearance in New Haven, where he was knocked out by eventual champion Fernando Verdasco. Kohlschreiber is probably not a significant threat in this loaded section of the draw, but he should have enough to get past Seppi.
