Roger Federer kicks off the 2009 U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. His unheralded opponent is NCAA singles champion Devin Britton.
(1) Roger Federer vs. Devin Britton
Britton did not believe it when he was told of his first-round opponent at the U.S. Open. Text message after text message later, however, he knew the following was a reality: he is playing Federer, the tournament's five-time defending champion. Britton, a University of Mississippi product, won this year's NCAA singles title, but it has been slow going for the 18-year-old American since turning pro. He is 0-1, in ATP main-draw matches, 0-3 in ATP qualifying matches, and 0-1 at both the Challenger and Futures level. Neededless to say, it's not going to be pretty against a 15-time Grand Slam champion who recently won both the French Open and Wimbledon. Federer in easy straight sets is the obvious pick.
(21) James Blake vs. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo
It will be the second career meeting between Blake and Ramirez Hidalgo when the two veterans square off in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. Ramirez Hidalgo won their only previous encounter in a third-set tiebreaker at the Pilot Pen three years ago. Both men are slumping in the latter stages of his career, with the underdog Spaniard toiling at 115th in the world. Blake's struggles, although not out of nowhere, have been more unexpected. A recent foot injury all but destroyed what is the American's favorite time of year: summer hard-court season. The Open gives Blake one last chance to turn things around before the fall, and if nothing else, it should get off to a fine start. Look for the No. 21 seed to advance in four sets.
Donald Young vs. (14) Tommy Robredo
It's not uncommon to see Young's name in the main draw of the U.S. Open. Finally, however, he has a "Q" instead of "WC" by his name. Yes, the 20-year-old American got in on his own by qualifying after getting denied another wild card by the USTA. With three matches already under his belt in New York, will Young have the confidence to score a main-draw upset? It's possible, because speaking of confidence, Robredo has none right now; especially not on hard courts. Young has every reason to make this competitive, but Robredo has much more big-match experience and should survive in five sets.
