    8/29/09 9:06 PM | Kelli DeMario
Verdasco advances to Pilot Pen final After repeated rain delays at the Pilot Pen, Fernando Verdasco completed his semifinal clash with Igor Andreev indoors in New Haven. The second seed moves through to meet Sam Querrey in the championship match.

Second-seeded wildcard Fernando Verdasco survived a near wash-out at the Pilot Pen, defeating seventh seed Igor Andreev, 7-6, 7-6. The 25-year-old Madrid native overcame 11 double-faults Saturday afternoon, holding on to dismiss Andreev after one hour and 52 minutes of play.

With the semifinal victory, the Spaniard successfully extends his head-to-head record to 4-1 over the Russian. Verdasco looks to snag his first ATP World Tour title of the season, bringing his career tally to three. The World No. 10, who last captured a title at the 2008 tournament in Umag, reached his only 2009 final in Brisbane (lost to Stepanek).

Verdasco converted two of 11 break point opportunities during the match. The second seed ended the afternoon winning 81% of his first-service points and 14 of 33 on his second.

The Spaniard will contest the championship match against American Sam Querrey Saturday evening. The sixth-seeded 21-year-old knocked out Jose Acasuso in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4 in a little over one hour. Verdasco and Querrey have never played prior to Saturday’s battle for the title.
