Second-seeded wildcard Fernando Verdasco needed just 58 minutes to dispatch 11th seed Jurgen Melzer in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Spaniard moves through to his second consecutive semifinal in New Haven.
Fernando Verdasco eased his way through a quarterfinal-round meeting with Jurgen Melzer late Thursday afternoon, defeating the Austrian in 58 minutes of play. The second seed secured five of 6 break point opportunities during the match, notching a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-1. With the comprehensive win, the Spaniard extends his lead in the head-to-head to 3-1 over Melzer.
Verdasco started the match quickly, taking a 3-0 lead. The 25-year-old earned a second break of serve in the sixth game, pushing his advantage to 5-1. Verdasco failed to close the set in the next game, giving up his only break of the match. The second seed collected himself to reach set point at 5-3, finishing the opening set in 34 minutes.
The Spaniard snagged an early break at 1-1 in the second set. Verdasco once again achieved a 5-1 mark, passing through the set without facing a break point. The World No. 10 held match point at 5-1 as Melzer served, completing the contest in less than one hour.
Verdasco ended the day with 5 aces, capturing 12 of 16 second-service points. He moves on to face seventh seed Igor Andreev in the semifinals. Andreev fought through a two-hour and 21-minute match with Leonardo Mayer early Thursday, prevailing in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. The Spaniard is 3-1 lifetime against the Russian.
