  • Davydenko ousted by Querrey

    8/28/09 3:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Davydenko ousted by Querrey Top seed Nikolay Davydenko was sent packing in his quarterfinal match against American Sam Querrey. The American is the winner of the US Open Series.

Nikolay Davydenko had no answer for Sam Querrey's game in the opening set of Thursday's match. The Russian struggled so much with Querrey's serve that he was only able to secure 2 points on the return in the entire set. Querrey is not particularly known for his return of serve, but he took advantage of the small chance he had early in the set to get a service break from Davydenko.

Querrey's serve seemed to take a bit of a break in the second set. His percentage dropped from 64% to 53%. The American faced 4 break points; he was able to fight 3 of them off, but Davydenko still secured the only break of the set to level the match at one set a piece.

Davydenko had his chances in the third set. At 4-4, he had a couple of break points, but Querrey dug himself out with some good serving. The missed opportunities seemed to throw the Russian off. In his very next service game, Davydenko played terribly and suddenly Querrey found himself with 3 match points, and finally the match-winning break at love.

Querrey will take on the winner of Jose Acasuso and Florent Serra in the semifinals
