Sam Querrey and Jose Acasuso made their way into the quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Pilot Pen.
Sam Querrey def. Bjorn Phau 7-5, 6-3
Sam Querrey secured the lead in the US Open series with his win over Germany’s Bjorn Phau. The American cashed in on Phau’s dismal first serve percentage in the first set. The German served at 39% for the set. Querrey and Phau traded service breaks earlier in the set, but Querrey was able to secure the set winning break when Phau was serving to force a tiebreak. The German served better in the second set (68%), but his return game let him down. Querrey took his own turn at missing first serves in the second set. The American put in just 47% for the set, but Phau could not take advantage. A single service break for Querrey was enough to take the match. He will play top seed Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals.
Jose Acasuso def. Igor Kunitsyn 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3
Argentina’s Jose Acasuso continues his surprising run in New Haven, this time with a tough 3 set victory over Igor Kunitsyn of Russia. Acasuso beat Tommy Robredo of Spain in round 2. The Argentine got off to a slow start on Wednesday. Kunitsyn rolled through the first set easily with an early break of Acasuso’s serve. Neither man seemed able to hold onto the lead in the second set. Kunitsyn played catch-up as Acasuso went up a break twice, only to hand the lead back to the Russian. Acasuso finally leveled the set in the tiebreak. Kunitsyn’s serve fell apart in the third. Acasuso had 10 chances to break, converted two of them and pocketed his second upset in a row. Acasuso will take on France’s Florent Serra in the quarterfinals.
