Santoro, Acasuso advance, Dent sent packing Fabrice Santoro will have at least one more day in New Haven. The Frenchman defeated Italy’s Potito Starace to advance to the next round.

Fabrice Santoro def. Potito Starace 7-5, 6-0

The crowd at the Pilot Pen in New Haven will get to enjoy Fabrice Santoro for at least one more day. The Frenchman has always been a crowd favorite and he is now finishing up his last year on tour. He started the tournament with a win. Potito Starace was simply no match for the Frenchman. The first set was at least competitive, though filled with service breaks. Santoro and Starace traded 2 breaks of serve each, and it was only in the twilight of the set that Santoro secured the set-winning break of serve. The Frenchman played better in the second set. Starace had no chances to break and he surrendered another 3 service games to Santoro’s cause. Santoro will play Nikolay Davydenko in the next round.

Jose Acasuso def. Tommy Robredo 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5)

No. 3 seed Tommy Robredo was upset in three sets by Argentina’s Jose Acasuso on Tuesday in New Haven. Robredo won the first set handily; he did not give Acasuso any looks at his serve and he secured the necessary break to take the set 6-3. Acasuso turned the tables in the second set. Robredo faced 6 break points. He was able to fight off 5 of them, but the Argentine finally got the break at the tail-end of the set. Both players converted 2 more breaks of serve in the third set to force a deciding tiebreaker. Acasuso got the upset win with a 7-5 scoreline.

Igor Kunitsyn def. Taylor Dent 6-3, 6-4

American Taylor Dent was defeated in straight sets by Russia’s igor Kunitsyn. Dent struck 8 aces for the match, but it was not enough to hold off Kunitsyn. The Russian secured a service break in each set, and fought off all 6 break points against him. Dent, who was awarded a wildcard into the tournament, is ranked 196 in the world. He is back from a chronic back injury which has plagued him for much of his career. Kunitsyn will take on Jose Acasuso in the next round.
