Second seed Fernando Verdasco moved into the round of 16 at the Pilot Pen on Tuesday, following his straight-sets dismissal of Paul Capdeville. The Spaniard defeated the Chilean 6-0, 6-3 in just 49 minutes.
Fernando Verdasco successfully regrouped after a disappointing early exit in Montreal a week ago, scoring a quick opening-round victory in New Haven on Tuesday. The second-seeded wildcard posted a comprehensive win over opponent Paul Capdeville in the second round, 6-0, 6-3. The Spaniard improved his head-to-head record to 2-0 against Capdeville, having first defeated the Chilean at the 2005 US Open.
Verdasco needed less than 13 minutes to build a 4-0, double-break lead in the opening set. The World No. 10 captured every game in the 6-0 first set, converting his second set point to close in 20 minutes. Capdeville won just 10 of 28 total points, unable to hold serve. The second seed snagged 88% of his first-service points and 71% of his second.
The 25-year-old continued the momentum in set two, earning a two-break advantage to lead 5-1. Verdasco dropped serve at 5-1, faltering as he attempted to finish the match. The Spaniard recovered in the next game, ending the contest in 49 minutes.
Verdasco completed the afternoon with 8 aces, winning 90% of the points on first serve. The second seed moves through to face 16th seed Andreas Seppi in the third round. The Italian rallied from a set down to knock out Yen-Hsun Lu on Tuesday, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. Verdasco is 4-0 lifetime against Seppi.
