Top seed Nikolay Davydenko squeaked out a tight first set against American Robert Kendrick to advance to the quarterfinals in New Haven.
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko was pushed to the limit in the first set of his second round match against Robert Kendrick. The American’s serve did the most damage. Kendrick blasted 8 aces past Davydenko in the first set alone. The Russian did manage to secure a service break against the American, but he also gave one up himself. The ensuing tiebreak was tight. Davydenko saved 3 set points before finally gaining the mini-break to snag the lead.
Davydenko was more emphatic in the second set. Kendrick got no opportunities to break. Though the American served well once again, Davydenko’s return was too strong. Kendrick gave up a single service break early in the set. Davydenko will take on No. 15 seed Fabrice Santoro in the quarterfinals.
