    Andreev and Melzer advance to Pilot Pen quarterfinals Fellow tournament seeds Igor Andreev and Jurgen Melzer moved safely through to the quarterfinal-round of competition at the Pilot Pen early Wednesday.

    (7) Igor Andreev def. (Q) Frederico Gil 6-4, 6-4

    Seventh seed Igor Andreev reached the final eight in New Haven, following his straight-sets defeat of qualifier Frederico Gil. The Russian surrendered serve only once during the match, scoring a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 32 minutes. Andreev secured three of eight break point opportunities on the afternoon to secure his fourth quarterfinal spot of the season. The 26-year-old, who began the week ranked World No. 30, advances to his fourth quarterfinal at the Pilot Pen.

    Andreev moves on to face Leonardo Mayer in the quarterfinals. The Argentine dismissed Simone Bolelli in the round of 16 on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-4.

    (11) Jurgen Melzer def. (8) Victor Hanescu 7-6, 4-6, 6-1

    Eleventh seed Jurgen Melzer booked a place in the Pilot Pen quarterfinals, surviving a tough three-set match against eighth seed Victor Hanescu early Wednesday. The Austrian pocketed two breaks of the Romanian’s serve in the deciding set, closing the 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 match in one hour and 58 minutes of play. Melzer successfully levels the head-to-head series with Hanescu at 4-4, having rebounded after an early-round loss to the eighth seed in Montreal. The Austrian returns to the New Haven quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.

    Melzer will take on the winner of the round of 16 clash between second seed Fernando Verdasco and 16th seed Andreas Seppi. The 11th seed trails the Spaniard 1-2 in the head-to-head, and is 0-2 against the Italian.
