With Monday’s hard-fought win over Marc Gicquel, American Sam Querrey has secured his spot as winner of the US Open Series.
For a set and a half, the match between Sam Querrey and Marc Gicquel appeared headed for an easy straight set win for the American. Querrey did not serve particularly well; he had just 2 aces and a 58% first serve percentage. Still, it was better than what Gicquel offered. The Frenchman served at a dismal 36%; Querrey was able to take advantage with 2 breaks of serve.
The second set appeared to be headed in the same direction. The American got an early break and jumped out to a 4-2 lead. Gicquel was able to break back though, and he leveled the set at 4-4. Querrey was able to hold to force a tiebreak, but he faltered in the early-goings. Gicquel secured several minibreaks to take a 6-2 lead. Querrey held serve for 6-3, but the Frenchman took the set on the next point.
Querrey took back control in the third. Gicquel was once again shaky on serve and the American was able to get the match win with two more breaks of serve. Querrey now heads into the US Open as the winner of the US Open Series. He will take on the winner of Bjorn Phau and Nicolas Almagro.
