Second seed Fernando Verdasco kicks off his bid at the Pilot Pen on Tuesday. The Spaniard faces Paul Capdeville of Chile in the second round.
Fernando Verdasco, entering the tournament as the second seed, holds a 1-0 head-to-head series advantage over Paul Capdeville. The Spaniard won their only career meeting at the 2005 US Open, posting a straight-sets victory in the second round, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. The Madrid native is 34-16 on the season, set to make his third stop on the Olympus US Open Series.
Verdasco looks to regroup after a disappointing first-round exit at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters last week. The World No. 10 fell in the opening round to countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets, 6-7, 6-7. Prior to the Cincinnati Masters, the 25-year-old advanced to the round of 16 in Montreal, having lost to Andy Roddick in three close sets.
The Spaniard has enjoyed a consistent year, reaching the quarterfinal-round or better in nine tournaments. Verdasco, a first-time semifinalist at the Australian Open, finished among the final eight in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid. The second seed booked his last quarterfinals appearance in Bastad in mid-July (lost to Monaco).
Verdasco made his way into the Pilot Pen semifinals in 2008, bowing out to Mardy Fish in three sets. The 25-year-old, who debuted at the event in 2005, has advanced to the quarters or beyond in three of four attempts.
The 88th-ranked Capdeville, a modest 7-13 for the year, is competing in his first Pilot Pen. The Chilean won his first-round match over Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets on Sunday. Prior to recording the 7-5, 6-3 victory, the 26-year-old had not won an ATP World Tour-level match since his run to the semis in Estoril.
