Simone Bolelli is through to the second round of the Pilot Pen on Monday, following his straight-sets defeat of Christophe Rochus. Marcos Baghdatis fell to qualifier Frederico Gil in straight sets.

Frederico Gil successfully leveled the head-to-head series against Marcos Baghdatis at 1-1 Monday afternoon. The Portuguese qualifier eased his way through to a 6-4, 6-3, first round-victory without dropping serve, saving the only break point against him in the second set. Gil converted two of 6 break point opportunities on the day, pocketing one break per set. The 110th-ranked 24-year-old finished the one-hour and 23-minute match winning 79% of his first-service points. Baghdatis, who drops to 16-14 on the season, made just 38% of his first serves during the match.
Gil moves on to face 12th seed Philipp Petzschner in the second round. The two will meet for the first time Tuesday afternoon.
Simone Bolelli def. Christophe Rochus 6-3, 6-4
Simon Bolelli secured five of 10 break point chances during his opening-round clash with Christophe Rochus early Monday. The Italian came through the first round after 77 minutes of competition, 6-3, 6-4. Rochus, struggling on serve throughout the match, donated seven double-faults and won a poor 10 of 27 points on second-serve. The 30-year-old has suffered seven consecutive first-round exits, dating back to his trip to Halle last spring. With the victory, Bolelli captures his maiden win in New Haven.
The 67th-ranked Italian advances to take on 13th seed Andreas Beck in round two. The players contest their first-career match on Tuesday.
