American Robert Kendrick and Jose Acasuso of Argentina successfully navigated the first round on Monday at the Pilot Pen.
Robert Kendrick def. Frederik Nielsen 6-3, 7-5
Robert Kendrick was not at his best in his first round match against Danish qualifier Frederik Nielsen. The American served at a shocking 38% in the first set. Kendrick has a reputation as a big server, but he hit just 2 aces in the first set. Despite his low level of play, Kendrick captured the first set on a single service break. Nielsen earned 2 break points, but the American fought them off. The second set was a study in service breaks. About every other service game featured a break of serve by one of the two players. Kendrick was finally able to take the set (and match) with a third break of Nielsen’s serve. The American will take on Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.
Jose Acasuso def. Maximo Gonzalez 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-2
Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez played dreadfully in the opening set. Gonzalez allowed countryman Jose Acasuso to win more than 50% of the points on his return, a fact which revealed itself in the 6-1 scoreline. Gonzalez made few inroads on Acasuso’s serve in the set. Acasuso did not lose a single first serve point. Gonzalez got his act together in the second set. He still made little headway on Acasuso’s serve, but he was not so generous with his own serve. Gonzalez leveled the match at one set a piece in a tight tiebreaker. It was back to business as usual in the third set, however. Gonzalez once again gave up two early breaks of serve and Acasuso rolled to victory with an easy third set.
