Taylor Dent surprised former world No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic in the first round in New Haven on the first day of play at the Pilot Pen.
American Taylor Dent has struggled over the last several years with chronic back problems. The serve and volleyer reached as high as 21 in the world back in 2005, but his battle with injury and subsequent return to the game has him stuck just inside the top 200 (196). Dent has spent some time playing on the Challenger circuit to boost his ranking.
Ivan Ljubicic has had a rough time of late. The Croat is ranked 50 in the world, low enough that he was forced to qualify for the Masters event in Cincinnati. He successfully made the main draw, but he was knocked out in the second round by Novak Djokovic.
Dent was impressive on serve in Sunday’s match. The American did not face a single break point in the first set, and he fought off the only one against him in the second. Ljubicic was not as tough on serve. Dent was successful in securing a break of serve in each set to take the upset win.
Dent will take on Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in the second round.
