The Frenchmen were in good form on day one in New Haven as Florent Serra and Marc Gicquel found safe passage to round 2.
Marc Gicquel def. Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-3, 6-4
Marc Gicquel was able to take advantage of the weak serving of Argentina’s Martin Vassallo Arguello. The Argentine faced a whopping fourteen break points in the one hour and thirty minute match – thirteen of which occurred in the second set. Gicquel had just one break point chance in the opening set (which he took advantage of), but the second set offered a buffet of break point opportunities. The Frenchman once again converted one, but that was all he needed to win the match handily. Gicquel will take on American Sam Querrey on Monday in the second round.
Florent Serra def. Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-3
Florent Serra took out big-serving Belgian Steve Darcis in straight sets. The Belgian had difficulty with his serve in this first round match. He put just 45% of his first serves in and he hit 5 double faults to 4 aces. Serra was able to take advantage of the Beligian’s weakness. The first set was decided by a single break of serve for Serra, but he secured 3 service breaks in the second. Darcis’ serve steadily got worse as the match progressed. Serra had 9 break point chances for the set. The Frenchman will take on countryman Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
