American Robert Kendrick and Jose Acasuso of Argentina will be in action on Monday in New Haven, as the Pilot Pen Tennis continues round 1 play.
Robert Kendrick vs. Frederik Nielsen
American Robert Kendrick has been struggling this summer. The 29 year old American failed to qualify for Cincinnati (he lost to Chris Guccione in the second round of qualifying) and prior to that, he only won 1 match during the US Open Series. He was able to beat Vince Spadea 6-0, 6-0 in Los Angeles, but has won nothing but a round of qualifying since. Frederik Nielsen is a little-known Danish player ranked 315 in the world. The qualifier spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit, and even there he is sometimes forced to qualify. Kendrick might be off his game right now, but he should beat Nielsen.
Jose Acasuso vs. Maximo Gonzalez
In a clash of the Argentines, Jose Acasuso will take on Maximo Gonzalez for the first time in their professional careers. Neither player is a particular danger on hard courts. They follow the grand tradition of South American tennis as clay court specialists. Acasuso, who sits at 52 in the world, has at least attempted to play on hard courts this summer. He had a win in Cincinnati over Lucasz Kubot before losing in straight sets to Roger Federer. Gonzalez has not ventured of clay since losing in the first round of Wimbledon. Gonzalez is not completely hopeless on hard courts, but his lack of match play will probably hurt him. Acasuso for the win.
