Tomas Berdych scores a routine victory over Chris Guccione on Thursday night in Cincinnati. Berdych will take on Rafael Nadal for a spot in the semifinals.
Tomas Berdych dispatched Chris Guccione 6-4, 6-3 in the third round of the Masters Series Cincinnati on Thursday night. After a routine one hour and five minutes, Berdych booked his place alongside Rafael Nadal in a Friday evening quarterfinal showdown.
Short points were the order of the day for Berdych and Guccione, two big servers and huge hitters, and it was Berdych who had the upper hand in most of them. Both men served dismally throughout the opening frame of play, but poor first-serve percentages doomed Guccione alone. The 6'7'' Aussie served at jusy 43 percent and failed to save one of his opponent's three break chances. Berdych put in a mere 46 percent of his first offerings, but he saved both of the break points he faced to consolidate his slim advantage.
The serving picked up slightly in set two, but this time it was even more routine for Berdych. The 18th-ranked Czech lost only two points in four service games, and won all nine of his second-serve points. One break would have been enough for Berdych, but instead he took two, the second of which finished off the match in style.
Guccione still enjoyed a great week, qualifying for the main draw and upsetting Philipp Kohlschreiber and Chris Guccione on his way to the third round. The world No. 124 wrapped up Thursday night with nine aces and six double-faults while serving at 50 percent.
Berdych improves to 3-0 lifetime against Guccione. He is 3-4 in seven career meeting with Nadal, including a thrilling win a third-set tiebreaker at this same event four years ago.
