  • Benneteau and Stepanek advance, Youzhny ousted

    8/20/09 2:44 AM | Cheryl Murray
Benneteau and Stepanek advance, Youzhny ousted Radek Stepanek got past Marat Safin to land safely in the third round. Joining him there are Julien Benneteau and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who took out Mikhail Youzhny.

Radek Stepanek def. Marat Safin 4-6, 6-3, 6-1

For one set, Russia’s Marat Safin showed a glimpse of the Grand Slam champion that he once was. The Russian sent 6 aces rocketing past Radek Stepanek and he saved all 5 of the break points against him. As is often the case with Safin these days, his form lasted for a single set. Stepanek was not troubled on serve in the second set, and he secured an early break to level the match at one set a piece. From the moment Safin lost the second set, his game fell apart. Points in the third set were short due to the many errors from the Russian’s racket. Three service breaks for Stepanek sealed Safin’s fate.

Julien Benneteau def. Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 3-6, 6-2

Lucky loser Julien Benneteau gained entry to the main draw when Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew due to fatigue. The Frenchman had the benefit of a first round bye, since he took Del Potro’s spot in the draw. Jurgen Melzer of Austria was not as fortunate - he had a 3 hour marathon match against Feliciano Lopez of Spain. Benneteau took the first set easily. He converted 2 of his 4 break point chances and faced none on his own serve. Melzer made a push in the second set, but in the end his fatigue from the previous day’s match got the best of him.

    Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 6-3

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain had a fantastic upset win over world No. 10 Fernando Verdasco in the first round. On Wednesday, he added to his impressive wins in Cincinnati with a straight set defeat of Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny. The Russian was dreadful on serve. Garcia-Lopez earned a staggering 18 break points in 2 sets. Youzhny fought off all but 4 of them, but that was more than enough for Garcia-Lopez to take the easy win. Garcia-Lopez will take on Julien Benneteau of France in the third round.
