Philipp Petzschner and Chris Guccione post first-round wins in Cincinnati on Tuesday afternoon. They defeat Simone Bolelli and Philipp Kohlschreiber, respectively.
Philipp Petzschner d. (Q) Simone Bolelli 7-6(6), 6-3
Petzschner survived a serving contest with Bolelli on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Masters Series Cincinnati after one hour and 29 minutes of play. Neither player managed to break serve in the first set, although Petzschner earned two break-point opportunities and Bolelli had one chance. Almost nothing could even separate them in the ensuing tiebreaker, but Petzschner finally pulled it out eight points to six.
The 39th-ranked German, in fine form having reached the third round in both Washington and Montreal, made quicker work of his opponent in set two, but just barely. Petzschner earned one break point and he seized it midway through the second frame of play. From there he serve out the match with ease, never facing a break point. Petzschner finished the day with seven aces and one double-fault while winning an impressive 90 percent of his first serves. Next up for Petzschner is Tomas Berdych.
(Q) Chris Guccione d. Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 2-6, 6-3
Having already qualified for the main draw, Guccione kept up his fine form in Cincinnati by upsetting Philipp Kohlschreiber in a three-setter than lasted just one hour and 31 minutes. Not a single break point occurred until Kohlschreiber served to stay in the first set at 5-6, but that's when Guccione capitalized on the first chance of the day to steal the opening frame of play. Kohlschreiber turned the tide in set two, getting a better read on his opponent's serves and winning seven of 10 second-serve points.
In keeping with the back-and-forth nature of the match, Guccione regained the momentum in the final set. The 6'7'' Australian blasted seven aces with no double-faults while capturing 14 of 16 first-serve points. Guccione, ranked 124th in the world, saved both of the break points he faced, making one break of his own stand up for victory. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will face Guccione on Wednesday for a spot in the third round.
