Chris Guccione upsets Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Cincinnati second round on Wednesday. Guccione will face either Tomas Berdych or Philipp Petzschner for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Chris Guccione could be in the midst of a breakout week.
The 24-year-old, mired at 124th in the world rankings, had to qualify just to get into the main draw of the Masters Series Cincinnati. Now he suddenly finds himself in the third round after toppling Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(12), 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Guccione needed only one hour 16 minutes--most of that in the first set--to put himself one win away from the quarterfinals.
Expected to be a serving contest, the match was just that throughout the opening frame of play. Tsonga never faced a single break point, while Guccione had to save three despite blasting 13 aces. In the inevitable tiebreaker, Guccione saved five set points at 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 10-11, and 11-12. The point at 10-11 came on Tsonga's serve, but Guccione survived a long rally to keep his hopes alive. With his opponent serving at 12-13, the 6'7'' Australian capitalized on his third set point.
From there Tsonga disappeared mentally. Guccione broke immediately in set two and never looked back, holding with ease while winning all 10 of his first-serve points. Tsonga won less than 70 percent of his first-serve points in the second set and surrendered six of eight points when he had to toss in a second serve. It was a disappointing effort from the seventh-seeded Frenchman, who had just scored an impressive comeback victory over Roger Federer en route to last week's Montreal semifinals.
Guccione finished Wednesday's match with 20 aces and six double-faults. He awaits either Tomas Berdych or Philipp Petzschner in the third round.

Hullo all. It seems things have not worked out and I shan't be on holiday as planned. I'm proud of Jo with some fine performances produced by him this year and Chris for rolling 'Yahtzee' and making the second. Hooray!
I also wanted to apologise to everyone for somehow revelling in the past about my family life although the real reason is I am discovering and learning, adding things up as I go, with just using the internet for the first time June 08. I will now learn to keep things in perspective and only talk about the 'tennis'. Lastly, to the site for these fantastic opportunities to let out our thoughts of each situation. Enjoy the week.
