Roger Federer reached the third round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Wednesday. The World No. 1, twice a title-winner in Cincinnati, dispatched Jose Acasuso in straight sets.
Roger Federer began his 2009 campaign at the Masters Cincinnati in winning fashion, recording a 6-3, 7-5 victory over opponent Jose Acasuso Wednesday afternoon. The World No. 1 posted his fifth career win against the Argentine, improving his head-to-head to a perfect 5-0. With the second-round victory, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion defeats Acasuso for the second time in Cincinnati, having captured a straight-sets quarterfinals win in 2005.
Federer secured a break of serve during the seventh game of the opening set. The Swiss led 5-3, following a forehand error from the Acasuso racket. Federer quickly collected double-set point at 5-3, closing the first set on an ace. The World No. 1 finished the opening set winning all but three points on serve.
The players contested a closer set two, neither able to build a lead at the start. Acasuso held a break point at 3-2 in the second set, but failed to convert. Federer looked to take the advantage later in the set, earning triple break point on the Argentine’s serve at 4-4. The Swiss lost a 40-0 lead in the game, uncharacteristically missing a couple of service returns. Federer recovered at 5-5, taking a service break advantage after Acaususo struck another errant forehand. The World No. 1 snagged three match points serving at 6-5, completing the 70-minute match on a backhand winner.
The Swiss, never surrendering serve during the match, ended the afternoon with 14 aces and 88% of his first-service points won.
Federer will meet David Ferrer in the round of 16. The Spaniard came through his second-round clash to upset 14th seed Marin Cilic Tuesday evening, 7-6, 6-2. The Swiss is 8-0 lifetime against the Spaniard, winning four of the matches on a hard-court.
