The strain of a long season was evident on Monday as both Radek Stepanek and Nicolas Almagro advanced due to opponent injury.
Viktor Troicki and Radek Stepanek played a tight first set in their first round match in Cincinnati. The two men traded breaks of serve to force the opening set tiebreaker. Stepanek, with his highly aggressive ground game, was able to take firm control of the breaker and he allowed Troicki just 2 points.
Troicki came out deflated in the second set. Stepanek won the first game with an emphatic service break, at which point the Serb determined that the foot injury which has been plaguing him this summer, would make continuing the match impossible. Stepanek will take on Marat Safin in the second round.
Also falling victim to injury was Israel’s Dudi Sela. Like Troicki, Sela found himself outplayed in the first set. The Israeli did not have a single break point against Almagro. Sela served at 45% for the match and he surrendered a single break of serve. Almagro won the first game of the second set when Sela retired with a groin injury. The Israeli will reportedly not play the US Open in 2 weeks. Almagro will take on new world No. 2 Andy Murray in the second round.
