Ninth seed Gilles Simon earned safe passage into round two in Cincinnati, following his opening-round defeat of wildcard Wayne Odesnik Monday afternoon. The Frenchman hit 8 aces and saved six of 6 break points on his way to a 6-3, 6-2 victory after one hour and 23 minutes of competition. The 24-year-old records his second win of the season over the 23-year-old American, extending his lead to 2-0 in the head-to-head series. Simon, who advanced to the round of 16 in Montreal (lost to Tsonga), improves his 2009 record to 28-22. The Frenchman has yet to reach the third round in Cincinnati in three previous attempts.

Simon will square off against Igor Andreev in the second round. The Russian won his opening-round match over veteran Nicolas Kiefer in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. The Frenchman holds a perfect 3-0 lifetime advantage against the Russian.

Ivan Ljubicic rallied from a set down in his opening-round match with Florent Serra, holding on to prevail 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. After dropping serve in the opening set, the veteran Croat held serve for the remainder of the match, saving three break points. The 30-year-old former World No. 3 crushed 19 aces during the one-hour and 47-minute contest, reaching the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters for the eight time since his tournament debut in 1999. With his third career victory over the Frenchman, Ljubicic records match-win No. 20 of the season.

Ljubicic moves through to face World No. 4 Novak Djokovic in round two. He trails the 2008 Cincinnati Masters finalist 1-2 in the head-to-head series.
