Marat Safin served up a host of aces in his opening round match against American Robby Ginepri.
Russia’s Marat Safin took out fellow tournament wildcard Robby Ginepri to advance to the second round in Cincinnati. Safin hit an impressive 13 aces in his straight set victory. The Russian was up a service break and served for the first set at 5-4, but gave the break of serve back to Ginepri. Not to be outdown, the American promptly lost serve for a second time in the set to permit Safin a second chance to take the lead.
The second set featured no service breaks. Safin continued to struggle with his forehand and he served at 48%, but Ginepri’s form was poor enough that he could not take advantage. The American played well enough to hold serve throughout the set and force the tiebreak.
Safin was uncharacteristically solid in the breaker. Ginepri only snagged 2 points from the Russian. Safin will move onto the second round where he will play Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.
