Sam Querrey returned to winning form after an early exit in Montreal, prevailing in his opening-round match against qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu. The American, who captured a solid 78% of his first-service points, surrendered serve just once during the 66-minute contest to earn a place in the second round. Querrey meets compatriot and 6th seed Andy Roddick in round two. The 21-year-old has yet to win a match over the elder American in three previous attempts.

Igor Andreev def. Nicolas Kiefer 6-1, 7-5

Igor Andreev advances to the second round in Cincinnati, following a straight-sets defeat of veteran Nicolas Kiefer on Monday. The Russian held nine of 9 service games during the 70-minute opening-round match, successfully leveling the head-to-head-series with the German at 2-2. The 26-year-old took advantage of a weak second-serve percentage from the 32-year-old, winning 14 of 22 points. The Russian struck a half-dozen aces on the day, reaching round two at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters for the second consecutive year.

Andreev will take on 9th seed Gilles Simon in the second round on Tuesday. The Frenchman took out American wildcard Wayne Odesnik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Russian trails 0-3 lifetime against Simon, having lost two of the three matches on a hard-court.
