Fourteenth seed Marin Cilic reaches the second round of the Cincinnati Masters, following his straight-sets dismissal of former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrer Monday afternoon. The Croat overcame a difficult serving day, donating a quartet of double faults along with less than 50% of first serves made. Cilic secured three of 8 break point opportunities on the afternoon, closing the opening-round match in one hour and 12 minutes of play. The 20-year-old, who had lost back-to-back first-round matches heading into the Cincinnati Masters, improves his season record to 32-13.
Cilic will take on David Ferrer in the second round. The Spaniard came through his opening-round clash with Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The two are 1-1 in the head-to-head, set to meet for the third time in 2009.
Jose Acasuso def. (Q) Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-3
Jose Acasuso won his first-round match on Monday, knocking out qualifier Lukasz Kubot in straight sets.
