  • Youzhny, Verdasco into Montreal third round

    8/12/09 8:59 PM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny, Verdasco into Montreal third round Mikhail Youzhny defeats John Isner in three sets on Wednesday at the Masters Series Monteal. Youzhny is joined in the third round by Fernando Verdasco.

    Mikhail Youzhny d. (SE) John Isner 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-3

Youzhny halted Isner's recent hot streak on Wednesday afternoon, dispatching the in-form American after two hours and 34 minutes in the Rogers Cup second round. It could have been over in much quicker fashion, but Youzhny blew a chance to serve out the first set at 5-4, squandering two set points in the process. The 65th-ranked Russian then lost a tense tiebreaker 10 points to eight.

From there, however, Youzhny bounced back to dominate sets two and three. As Isner faded, Youzhny started to get better and better reads on his 6'9'' opponent's big serve. Isner won just five service points in the entire second set, and could not recovered in the third. Youzhny went up an early break in the final frame of play, then came back from a 40-15 deficit at 5-3 to finish off the proceedings with yet another break. Isner finished with only nine aces, all of which came in the first set. Next up for Youzhny is world No. 4 Novak Djokovic.

    (10) Fernando Verdasco d. Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-1

Verdasco needed a mere 58 minutes to destroy Mayer in the Montreal second round on Wednesday. The 10th-seeded Spaniard lost only two points on serve in the first set, so a pair of breaks was more than enough to ease through the opening frame of play.

More of the same continued throughout the second set. Verdasco dropped five points on serve during the third frame of play, but actually got broken once. It mattered little, as the world No. 11 won all four of his return games while hammering Mayer's second deliveries. Verdasco won 10 of 12 second-serve return points in the third set and won 17 of 22 overall. He will face either Andy Roddick or Igor Andreev for a spot in the quarterfinals.
