  • Tsonga withstands Schuettler

    8/12/09 7:18 PM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga withstands Schuettler Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made his way to the third round with a three set win over Germany's Rainer Schuettler in the Wednesday matinee match.

Had the baseline been a meter longer, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga would have won his second round match in straight sets. As it was, the court was regulation-sized, and Tsonga dropped the opening set. The Frenchman could not find his range in the beginning of the match. His forehand drifted long several times in Tsonga’s first service game; he was eventually broken in that game on a nice passing shot from Rainer Schuettler.

The German held onto the single service break all throughout the first set, taking advantage along the way of Tsonga’s mistimed forehand.

Tsonga began to find his groove in the second set. The Frenchman was more selfish with his unforced error donations and Schuettler quickly found himself in a hole at 2-3. Tsonga converted his first break point of the day on a glorious down-the-line forehand winner. Like the first set, a single break of serve was enough to win the set. Tsonga leveled the match on his first set point with an unreturnable serve.

Tsonga had chances for the early break of serve at 2-2 in the third set. Schuettler quickly went down 0-40; he made a stab volley winner to save the first, and he hit a good, deep forehand to save the second. The best point of the match came at 30-40. Schuettler and Tsonga traded groundstrokes until the Frenchman ventured into net. Schuettler hit a passing shot which Tsonga made a dive for. The Frenchman rolled too far and touched the net. He lost the point and after several more deuce points, the game.

Schuettler was delaying the inevitable. At 3-3, Tsonga secured the first break of the third set with a passing shot winner. Schuettler had a small chance at 4-3 to get the break back; he had two deuce points, but nothing came of it. Tsonga held the lead until he served out the match at love.
