  • Hanescu, Kohlschreiber and Robredo advance in Montreal

    8/12/09 12:45 AM | Cheryl Murray
Hanescu, Kohlschreiber and Robredo advance in Montreal The second day of the Montreal tournament was interrupted by a mid-afternoon downpour, but Victor Hanescu, Phillip Kohlschreiber and Tommy Robredo got through to the second round.

Victor Hanescu def. Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-3

Austria’s Jurgen Melzer had a terrible serving day on Tuesday against Victor Hanescu of Romania. Melzer faced a whopping 13 break points on his serve – 12 of them in a dreadfully played first set from the Austrian. Hanescu, though not particularly known for his return game, was able to capitalize on 2, while surrendering just 1 break of serve to take a set lead. The second set was more cleanly played from Melzer. Hanescu had just one opportunity to break serve – unfortunately for Melzer, he was able to capitalize on that opportunity. The single break of serve was enough to pocket the second set and move into the second round against Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Phillip Kohlschreiber def. Tomas Berdych 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-4

The fans situated on outside court 9 on Tuesday got a treat. The first round match between Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany and the Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych was as fine a match as one could hope for – first round or otherwise. Neither man served particularly well (both around the 50% mark), but the 3 hour match was rife with drama. Service breaks were traded in the first set to push the tiebreaker. Kohlschreiber was able to take advantage of some loose points from the Berdych racket to take the lead. The second set played out nearly identically to the first. A single service break for each man set up another tiebreaker. Berdych finally leveled the match with 11-9, but he could not hold onto the momentum. Kohlschreiber faced no break points in the third set and he converted one of the 4 he had on Berdych for the win.

Tommy Robredo def. Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-4, 6-2

Tommy Robredo of Spain had little difficulty getting past American Alex Bogomolov. The Spaniard never faced a single break point in the one hour and fifteen minute match. Robredo hit 6 aces to Bogomolov’s 1. The American was broken three times in the match. Robredo will take on Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in the 2nd round.
