Juan Martin Del Potro had an easy straight set victory over Jan Hernych in second round play on Wednesday. Joining the Argentine in the third round was Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Jan Hernych 6-2, 7-5
Any fatigue that Juan Martin Del Potro might have been feeling from his victory last week in Washington DC was not immediately evident in his first set against Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic. Del Potro came out serving well. The Argentine put 78% of his first serves in during the first set and he struck 6 aces. Hernych was completely out-gunned from the start; he did not earn a single break point chance for the set. Del Potro broke serve twice to take a one set lead. The second set was not quite as crisp from the Argentine. His first serve percentage dropped to 53%. Del Potro got the early break on Hernych, but a weak service game from the Argentine gifted a break right back. Finally at 5-5 in the second set, Del Potro put pressure on Hernych’s serve again and was rewarded with another break. He made no mistake serving the match out.
Philipp Petzschner def. Tommy Robredo 7-6(3), 7-6(4)
Tommy Robredo of Spain tried valiantly, but in the end he was unable to handle the 11 aces from the racket of Philipp Petzschner. Both sets of the 2 hour contest were evenly played by both men for the most part. Petzschner served better than Robredo, but the Spaniard was up to challenge. Each set offered a single service break for both men, and each was decided by a tiebreak. The match was determined mostly by the quality of Petzschner’s first serve. Over the course of a game, Robredo was able to keep pace, but in the tiebreaker where every point counts, Petzscner had too much firepower for the Spaniard. Petzschner will play the winner of Wednesday night’s blockbuster second round match between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.
