  • Youzhny sends Cilic tumbling out of Montreal

Youzhny sends Cilic tumbling out of Montreal Mikhail Youzhny upsets Marin Cilic to kick off the Masters Series Montreal on Monday afternoon. Youzhny awaits either John Isner or Jesse Levine in round two.

The 2009 Rogers Cup began in surprising fashion on Monday afternoon, with unseeded Mikhail Youzhny dispatching No. 15 seed Marin Cilic. Youzhny needed two hours and 26 minutes to surprise Cilic 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 and set up a second-round meeting with either John Isner or Jesse Levine.

A back-and-fourth affair saw Youzhny go up an early break and take a 4-1 lead in the first set. The Russian, however, promptly lost the next five games to throw away the opening frame of play.

Youzhny put up a similar effort in set two, going up a break for 6-5 before blowing a huge opportunity to close it out with little trouble. Serving to force a third set, Youzhny squandered five set points—including one with a double-fault—before getting broken. He went up an early mini-break in the tiebreaker, but Cilic returned the favor twice to go up 4-3 with serve. The 6’6’’ Croat blew what should have been an easy overhead at 4-3 and eventually finished the set losing four points in-a-row.

From there Cilic completely collapsed. He won a mere three return points during the final frame of play and a total of just eleven. Youzhny played solid tennis the rest of the way, but merely had to keep the ball in play in order to get the job done.

The relatively uninspiring match featured dismal serving by both men. Cilic got broken five times, put in only 50 percent of his first serves, and double-faulted five times. Youzhny donated a whopping 10 double-faults and surrendered serve on four different occasions.
