In two of the easiest matches of the day, Stanislas Wawrinka and Rainer Schuettler advanced to the second round.
Rainer Schuettler def. Florent Serra 6-4, 6-0
Germany’s Rainer Schuettler made quick work of Florent Serra of France in first round play on Monday. The win marks the first for the German over Serra. The match lasted just over an hour, in which time Schuettler broke Serra 5 times. The first set was at least somewhat competitive with traded service breaks and an insurance break for Schuettler. The second set, however was dismal from Serra. The Frenchman went 0-3 on break points against him and he served at just 50%. Schuettler will move into the second round where he will face another Frenchman in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-1
In another first round blowout, Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka pummeled Nicolas Kiefer in straight sets to advance to the second round. Kiefer made the semifinals at the Rogers Cup in 2008. He will remain ranked below 100 due to the points loss. Wawrinka breezed through the first set without facing a single break point. The Swiss man only broke Kiefer once, but he was in clear control of the match from the first point. The second set was a disaster for Kiefer. He was broken in all but one of his service games. He was no better on the return either. Wawrinka served at a dismal 36%, but Kiefer did not earn so much as a break point.
