American Andy Roddick won the battle of the big servers on Friday night against Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic. The win assured the American a semifinal berth against countryman John Isner.
The fact that Friday’s quarterfinal match between Ivo Karlovic and Andy Roddick was decided in 2 tie breakers was to be expected. They are both renowned for their first serve. In fact Karlovic in particular bases his entire game around his first serve – effectively enough that the Croat sits at 33 in the world. Roddick’s serve is not quite as vicious as Karlovic’s, but he has better ground strokes (and net game, now that he is with coach Larry Stefanki).
The first set did not go quite according to script. Each player pocketed an elusive service break, but despite the detour, the result of the opening set was the same – tiebreaker. Roddick was able to take advantage of Karlovic’s limited movement during extended points to secure the first set with 7-4 in the breaker.
Like the first set, the second was not simply a series of easy service holds. Both Roddick and Karlovic each managed to break the other’s serve to force the second set tiebreaker. The American was once again able to take advantage of a moment of weakness from Karlovic to neatly put away the match.
