American John Isner followed up his impressive second round upset victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with a win in the round of 16. Isner will be joined in the quarterfinals by Tomas Berdych.
John Isner def. Sebastien de Chaunac 6-2, 6-4
John Isner’s impressive form continued into his Thursday match against France’s Sebastien de Chaunac. Isner enjoyed one of the biggest wins of his career against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the previous round. The American stands at 6 ft. 9 in. tall and has a rocket of a first serve, but until this point in his career he has struggled with consistency. Isner struck a modest 3 aces against de Chaunac. Ordinarily, that statistic would spell disaster for the American, but Isner’s ground game was good enough to get the easy straight-set win without a stable of aces to sway the match his way. Isner will take on Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.
Tomas Berdych def. Philipp Petzschner 4-6, 6-3, 6-3
Tournament No 8 seed Tomas Berdych came back after dropping the first set to defeat Germany’s Philipp Petzschner. Berdych was a victim of his first serve percentage in the opening set. The Czech man put just 48% of his first serves in and he hit no aces. Petzschner was able to take advantage of both break point opportunities he earned against Berdych’s serve to secure the lead. Berdych’s first serve percentage was not significantly better in the second set, but Petzschner obligingly began to play worse. Two service breaks for the Czech man allowed him to level the match. Petzschner continued to play poorly into the third set. He surrendered another 3 service breaks to give Berdych passage to the quarterfinals.

Isner and Karlovic were both OUTSTANDING from the baseline on Thursday (which should come as a surprise). Their forehands were just awesome.
