Tommy Haas defeats Juan Carlos Ferrero to reach the Washington quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Next up for Haas is Fernando Gonzalez.
Something had to give when a pair of this summer's best players squared off in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. That something was Juan Carlos Ferrero, who finally showed some chinks in his armor as Tommy Haas took him out 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.
A match of multiple momentum swings saw Ferrero go up an early break in the first set only to surrender his own serve twice thereafter. The two veterans took turns playing flawless tennis, and after Haas ended the opening frame of play in style, Ferrero dominated set two.
Visibly wearing down after a long week in Croatia in which he finished runner-up, Ferrero could not sustain the momentum in the third. There was little he could do no matter what, as Haas was blasting winners from all areas of the court in addition to serving at 70 percent. The 23rd-ranked German, two years Ferrero's elder at 31, finished with 19 aces.
Haas needed one hour and 43 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash against Fernando Gonzalez. The fourth-seeded Chilean took care of Wayne Odesnik 6-2, 6-4 in an entertaining baseline duel that was closer than the score suggests.
Also advancing in a loaded bottom half of the draw was Robin Soderling, who survived Marc Gicquel 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Soderling will face Juan Martin Del Potro for a spot in the semifinals.
