Andy Roddick was impressive in his first appearance since the Wimbledon final. The American defeated Benjamin Becker in easy straight sets to advance.
Andy Roddick is quite at home on hard courts and it showed in his summer debut on the surface. Roddick is currently ranked 5th in the world and though he has not won a major this year, he has enjoyed some of the best success of his career under the tutelage of super-coach Larry Stefanki. He had a semifinal result at the Australian Open and he played a hard-fought final against Roger Federer at Wimbledon.
Roddick had no trouble with Benjamin Becker on Wednesday evening. The American skated through the match in under an hour. He hit a relatively low 8 aces, but that was more than enough to hold serve with ease. Becker did not have a whiff at a break point in the match. Roddick held with ease in both sets.
For his part, Becker went 1 for 4 on break points. Roddick broke early in the opening set then twice in the second set for the easy victory.
Roddick will take on countryman Sam Querrey in the round of 16.

He is on the verge. Question: Do you think he should improve his defense and commit to taking the net more often?
Would love to see him win the USO.

One other note: USTA/Arlen Kantarian will more than likely make USO courts as fast as possible, and this should help Andy.

I don't think he should take the net more until he improves his backhand slice approach. It's good, but it's just easy fodder for someone like Federer.
Also, faster courts will help The Fed as well, I think.
That being said, Roddick certainly is capable of winning a Slam, and I for one would really love to see that happen.
