Fernando Gonzalez defeats Alejando Falla in straight sets at the Legg Mason Classic on Wednesday. Lleyton Hewitt sets up a blockbuster with Juan Martin Del Potro
(4) Fernando Gonzalez d. (Q) Alejandro Falla 7-5 7-5
Gonzalez needed one hour and 24 minutes to get past Falla and reach the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Wednesday evening. The two veterans exchanged one break each en route to 5-5 in the first set, but a second break for Gonzalez at 6-5 finished it off in style.
The fourth-seeded Chilean fell behind an early break in the second, but got it back and again broke decisively at 6-5. Break points were the only real difference in the match; Gonzalez converted all five of his chances and saved eight of 11 against his own serve. Next up for the world No. 11 is unseeded Wayne Odesnik, a three-set winner over Igor Andreev.
Lleyton Hewitt d. (15) Dudi Sela 6-3, 2-6, 6-2
A marquee third-round matchup is in store at the Legg Mason Classic after Hewitt survived Sela in one hour and 56 minutes on Wednesday. Hewitt played rock-solid baseline tennis and took chances when he got looks at weak serves from Sela. The 28-year-old Aussie withstood a flawless second set by Sela, playing with consistency and exploiting the Israeli's forehand.
Hewitt's win sets up a mouth-watering showdown against defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro. The two recently met in the Wimbledon second round, where Hewitt scored a straight-set upset.
