An in-form Juan Carlos Ferrero upsets Tommy Robredo in straight sets on Wednesday afternoon in Washington. Next up for Ferrero is Tommy Haas.
Juan Carlos Ferrero kept up his scintillating 2009 form on Wednesday, crushing Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Ferrero needed one hour and 18 minutes to set up a third-round clash against Tommy Haas.
Only three days removed from finishing runner-up all the way over in Croatia, Ferrero has now won two matches in Washington, D.C. He ousted Nicolas Lapentti in round one and is now an impressive 28-12 in ATP matches for the season.
Robredo simply had no answer for Ferrero, as it was the same Ferrero who recently made it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals in addition to capturing a title in Casablanca. The world No. 29 was ruthless from the baseline and an increasingly frustrated Robredo went away quietly in the second set.
Ferrero never dropped serve against his fellow Spaniard, but had to save three break points. "The Mosquito" also did a surprisingly stellar job of getting in behind aggressive forehands and finishing rallies with emphatic volleys.
"I was a little bit surprised," Ferrero said. "I expected at the beginning a little bit tougher match, but I was hitting the ball very well today."
